DePaul Family and Social Medicine Residency Program
Listening to you, caring for you.

Serving Louisiana for over 180 years

DePaul Community Health Centers (DCHC) provided compassionate health care in New Orleans for 180 years when the hospital first opened its doors in 1859 as Hotel Dieu, which means “House of God” in French. The hospital was founded, owned, and operated by the Daughters of Charity and was the only private hospital in New Orleans that remained open during the Civil War. Hotel Dieu was run by the Catholic Church for many centuries. Their mission was to provide services to a wide range of people: not only the sick and injured, but also to needy travelers, pilgrims, and indigents.

After the sale of Hotel Dieu Hospital in 1992, the Daughters transitioned their efforts by establishing a community health ministry - DePaul Community Health Centers, formerly known as Daughters of Charity.

Depaul Community Health Centers has grown throughout the years

Our 11 health centers are conveniently located in Algiers, Bywater, Mid-city, Gentilly, Gretna, Harvey, Kenner, Metairie, New Orleans East, and Uptown New Orleans. DCHC provides care for chronic illnesses such as asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression, women's health, behavioral and mental health, dental, optometry, pharmacy, and podiatry. We also offer Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) services that are available at selected health centers.

DCHC is a proud member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic and nonprofit healthcare system. Our mission, which is similar to that of other Ascension Health ministries, “is to improve the health and well-being of our community and to be a presence of the “Love of Jesus” in the lives of all we serve and with whom we partner, by delivering health care that works, health care that is safe, and health care that leaves no one behind.”

Although our name may have changed, our vision remains the same

We aim to improve the health status of the community. Our mission is to advance the long tradition of the health ministry to the people of New Orleans, especially the under-served, through the development of a values-driven organization dedicated to primary care and preventive health services, addressing the needs of the total individual – body, mind, and spirit.
